5 Simple Ways To Get Motivated To Exercise

Ok maybe we shouldn’t go there, but after two long weekends in a row – one celebrated with chocolate eggs and another that remembered by baking buttery ANZAC cookies – they just screamed overindulgence! Feeling relaxed, no doubt. But now it’s time to ditch the leftover chocolate and cookies, just so we all can hop back into routine.

Here are my top five tips for getting your butt back into it:

  1. Set yourself a 30-day challenge: Start small – one goal at a time. Put it in writing, stick it to your wall, refrigerator or even mirror (that will get you out the door in a hurry!). It may be ‘walk the dog every single day for at least 30mins’ or ‘go to a yoga class everyday’. Don’t overcomplicate matters, though – pick one daily goal for the month and get on with it. I love writing a list and that feeling of satisfaction when I cross an item off it; it motivates me to keep going.
  2. Commit publicly: Tell friends, family, Twitter followers, Instagram friends. No one wants to see you fail; and more importantly, you wouldn’t want to see yourself fail in front of everyone else. When motivation is low, that little voice in your head will take over ‘how much stick am I getting to get if I don’t do it?’ Sometimes setting goals and sticking to them means you need to refrain from over committing yourself.
  3. Enlist a buddy: “People often say that motivation doesn’t last. Well, neither does bathing. That’s why we recommend it daily,” said Zig Ziglar. While the days are getting cooler, the sun is still shining, so grab a friend and go for a long walk, gym class or run. Tempted to give it a miss? Your friend is always good for telling you that all your excuses are lame or vice versa.
  4. Me time: In this crazy fast-paced world, don’t we all deserve some ‘me time’? Time away from the other half, kids or just the stressors of everyday life can make you feel more recharged and on the ball than you’d imagine. Don’t feel guilty for taking 30-60mins a day to focus on yourself. Just by doing this puts you in the right frame of mind to take on anything and anyone.
  5. Prepare the night before: Lay out your clothes, bottle, towel or whatever you need to get you out the door on the couch. Nothing keeps you under the doona longer than procrastinating on what you are going to wear. Download some new tunes or maybe a podcast so the beats get you going. Oh and just remember it’s cooler and getting darker in the A.M. now, there are loads of indoor activities you can do, just make sure you stay safe with bright clothes, a torch and stick to the main roads.
